The mission of the Gulf Coast of Texas African American Family Support Conference (GCTAAFSC) is to strengthen families and increase awareness of health and social service information and resources available through culturally sensitive education, supports, and partnerships for African Americans.
Helpful Interventions mission is to assess, educate, and support families helping themselves. H I has a significant history of providing services focused on supporting the entire family through various educational and supportive services in the Houston community. Helpful Interventions, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization, has filled a much-needed role of assisting families in accessing appropriate educational and social services to reach their highest potential since 1999. Helpful Interventions has served families and professionals throughout the Houston community.
Helpful Interventions is providing leadership to the planning of GCTAAFSC and is working in close collaboration with diverse community stakeholders invested in addressing issues impacting the African American community in Houston, Texas.
Conference Coordination- Helpful Interventions commenced a collaboration with Texas Health and Human Services- The Center for Elimination of Disproportionality and Disparities (CEDD). The Center for Elimination of Disproportionality and Disparities provides expertise in community engagement and reform efforts aimed at reducing and eliminating racial disproportionality and disparities. This is accomplished through the regional equity specialists working in communities across Texas in partnership with state and community stakeholders. The equity specialists provide technical assistance, training and consultation to support the development of collaborations across systems and strategies to reduce and eliminate disproportionality and disparities within health and human services, education, juvenile justice, health, mental health and other systems. CEDD will provide the conference coordination for the 2016 Gulf Coast of Texas African Family Support Conference (GCTAAFSC) in Houston, Texas.
The CEDD Equity Specialist and 2016 Conference Coordinator is Shondra Rogers-Mc-Gary. Shondra will provide expertise with the outreach to support the collaborative planning among Houston and the Texas stakeholders to plan a family focused conference in the Houston area.
GCTAAFSC is modeled after the Central Texas African American Family Support Conference, which has been held annually in Austin since 1999. The CTAAFSC has seen a record number of more than 700 consumers, families and community advocates conference attendees!
